I have long since despaired at the never-ending procession of transport ministers who seek to enhance their position by denigrating the efforts of British Rail in the past. But Secretary of State Chris Grayling reached a new low when, in defending his position on the current Virgin Trains East Coast franchise problems, he referred to British Rail as ‘a national laughing stock’.
