I sometimes find myself wondering why I go by train, and a return trip from Milton Keynes to Penmaenmawr on the North Wales coast line on Saturday 10 August was one of those days.

Virgin offers good value advance tickets to and from Chester, but not to the smaller stations west of there, so I bought my daughter tickets to and from Chester online, then tried to buy an off-peak return for the last part of the journey online too.

However, Transport for Wales (TfW) wouldn’t give me a ‘print at home’ option, picking up the tickets at Chester felt problematic for a 15-minute connection, and the charge for delivery by post was £6, which seemed rather high for a £23.10 journey. No problem – my local station efficiently sold me a ticket in 30 seconds.
