Network Rail is installing 9.500 tonnes of rock armour on the banks of the river Severn between Welshpool and Newtown following flooding caused by Storm Franklin in February.
Three consecutive storms in February damaged more than half a mile of the railway, closing it for several weeks while engineers repaired over 12 areas of washouts.
Construction of a new temporary access road means boulders from the Cefn Mawr quarry in Flintshire can now be installed. In addition to the access road and rock armour installation, hedgerows have been planted in gaps along the railway to help prevent flooding, while special matting has been installed to protect the roots of 100-year-old Redwood trees alongside the railway.
