When Modern Railways was founded nearly 60 years ago, the Stephensonian railway was widely regarded as obsolescent if not obsolete. Rival modes of ground transport were being forged in the white heat of Prime Minister Harold Wilson’s scientific revolution. Magnetic levitation, tracked air cushion vehicles and, inevitably, monorails.
