Transport Scotland has long been an exponent of electrification to Stirling, Dunblane and Alloa (SDA). While improved links to the job markets in Glasgow and Edinburgh will boost the prospects of towns in the northern part of Scotland’s central belt, the project also helps to make the most of the recently-completed core section of the Edinburgh to Glasgow Improvement Programme (EGIP). Fleet-of-foot EMUs on the Dunblane and Alloa services will make better use of track capacity on the lines through Falkirk than more plodding DMUs, allowing service intensification.
