CORNISH RENEWALS COMPLETED

CORNWALL’S RAILWAYS have seen significant track renewal work in early 2021. Over a mile of single line was replaced on the St Ives branch between Hawks Point crossing (Carbis Bay) and the buffer stop at St Ives during January. Then in March a week-long blockade from St Austell to Truro covered a number of track renewal sites, as well as a bridge replacement at Trewoon (near Burngullow) and the rationalisation of the ground frame at St Austell.

The track renewals were concentrated on three sites – St Austell, Burngullow, and Tregarne viaduct near Probus. These were small sections of plain line renewals on the Up main. The Tregarne site replaced continuous welded rail on wooden sleepers with concrete ones.
