DCO APPLICATION FOR TILBURY EXPANSION

THE PORT of Tilbury has submitted a development consent order application for the new Tilbury2 terminal it is looking to build.

If successful, the port envisages the new terminal will be operational in the second quarter of 2020 and will act as a satellite to the main port. Built on a 152-acre site which was part of the former Tilbury power station, it will comprise a roll on/ roll off ferry terminal for importing and exporting containers and trailers; a facility for importing, processing, manufacturing and distributing construction materials; a storage area for a variety of goods, including exported and imported cars; and strategic rail and road connections into the site.

The creation of the new terminal is central to the port’s expansion programme, which the port says is needed to cope with rising demand for construction materials and aggregates from the UK’s building sector, imported and exported cars, as well as an increase in ferry traffic, which carries consumer goods, perishables and steel between Europe and the UK.
