Our fourth day of virtual announcements of winners at the 2021 Golden Whistle awards focuses on the prizes for minimising delay minutes.

The announcement replaces the traditional event which we would usually hold in January but was cancelled to due to the pandemic. Our thanks go to those who have helped make the virtual awards possible – the Institution of Railway Operators and our sponsors Tracsis and Porterbrook.

Today we are pleased to announce the winners in the categories for minimising delay minutes. There are two categories – one covering passenger and freight operators, and a second for Network Rail Routes; for the first time at the Whistles this category incorporates Network Rail’s revised Routes within the new structure of Routes and Regions. Awards are calculated based on performance to Period 9 in 2020-21, and are normalised relative to the size of each operator or Route.

For passenger and freight operators, the winners are:

Gold Whistle (fewest delay minutes) – CrossCountry;

Silver Whistle (biggest reduction in delay minutes) – GB Railfreight.

For Network Rail Routes, the winners are:

Gold Whistle – East Coast Route;

Silver Whistle – East Midlands Route.

Our week of events concludes tomorrow. Network Rail Chief Executive Andrew Haines will speak at a webinar at 09.00, following which Whistles MC Dick Fearn will announce the winners in the Outstanding Operator categories.
