THE MAJOR works to remodel the layout around Derby station will take place between 22 July and 7 October 2018, Network Rail has announced.
The work, affecting East Midlands Trains and CrossCountry services, will see alterations take place to the track layout and signalling. Detailed timetables for the amended service that will operate will be published in the New Year.
As well as replacing the life-expired signalling around the station, the work will seek to alter the track layout to reduce conflicts. The aim is to separate the key flows of north to south EMT and CrossCountry services and CrossCountry’s Nottingham to Birmingham services, which reverse at the station, giving each a dedicated pair of platforms. The current bay platform 5 would be eliminated, and a new platform built on the Pride Park side of the station. The signalling works would see Derby power signal box close and control transfer to the East Midlands control centre.
It is understood current plans envisage EMT maintaining one hourly service from Derby to London St Pancras, with a second service avoiding the station and running via the Erewash Valley to Sheffield. CrossCountry services are set to divert around the station altogether, with replacement buses operating to connecting stations.
