FREIGHT IN THE NORTH WEST

Rail Freight Group

The North West has always been a key region for rail freight, and today it is becoming ever more important. Growth in intermodal and construction rail freight seen across the whole of the UKis leading to an increased demand for retail services to and from the major conurbations of Manchester and Liverpool, and from the Peak District quarries to destinations across the country. And the region is also a hub for a wide range of other products including domestic waste, automotive and other bulk and industrial products.

At a recent Rail Freight Group webinar, we explored some of the opportunities for freight in the north west. Speakers from Transport for Greater Manchester, Railfuture and waste and recycling business Suez outlined their perspectives on the role for rail, and the challenges it faces on the congested rail network, particularly around the major conurbations.
