GATWICK STATION REDEVELOPMENT PLAN

A PLANNING application has been submitted for a major redevelopment of Gatwick Airport station. If the application is successful, work could begin in 2019 and be completed by 2022.

The application has been submitted to Crawley Borough Council by Network Rail in partnership with the airport, Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership and the Department for Transport.

The proposed scheme seeks to almost double the size of the station concourse, provide eight new escalators, five new lifts and four new stairways, widen platforms 5 and 6 to reduce overcrowding and provide better connections to the south terminal with improved passenger information. Network Rail says the proposals will accommodate forecast rail growth to 2036.

A determination on the planning application is expected this spring, with funding parties to make a final decision on the project in the autumn.
