HIGHLAND MAIN LINE WORKS COMPLETED

A £57 MILLION programme of upgrades on the Highland main line between Perth and Inverness has been completed by Network Rail.

Funded by the Scottish Government, the work will help deliver an hourly service and a journey time reduction of 10 minutes. The project began in summer last year and was primarily focused on Aviemore and Pitlochry; it has been carried out by Bam Nuttall and Siemens.

At Pitlochry both platforms have been extended and the track layout modified so two trains can enter the station simultaneously, while the double track section has been extended at Aviemore. Semaphore signals have been replaced with colour-lights, and three private level crossings at Pitlochry have also been upgraded.
