HUZZAH FOR THE HUSSARS

Royal Riverside: to go with our article this month on the Windsor Link Railway, we can’t resist these pictures of the London & South Western terminus in the town. That impressive brick wall on the south side of the station is punctuated with high double doors – so a mounted troop could enter the platform all at once when Queen Victoria arrived. The blue-brick diaper work initials include references to ‘PA’ (Prince Albert – far left) and ‘SW’ (the South Western Railway), ‘1851’ (the year of the building’s completion) and, further along out of sight in this picture, ‘WT’ (for William Tite, architect of this magnificent station). At right is the Queen’s waiting room building, along with the turret from which a lookout was kept to get early warning of an impending royal arrival from the castle. The other photos show the entrance to the Queen’s waiting rooms (below left, now used as offices) and Queen Victoria’s private room within, with its impressive Gothic fireplace (below right). The building had a claim to fame in the 1960s as a location in one of the Carry On! films. Philip Sherratt
