The Midland main line has improved beyond all expectation. A decade ago, when Eurostar moved across from Waterloo to make its London terminus St Pancras International, that company announced a headline timing of 1hr 51min for the journey from St Pancras to Brussels Midi. I recall commenting at the time that this was the same time as the fastest hourly trains took to get from St Pancras to Derby!
