Levenmouth double track and electrified

Transport Scotland says the five-mile Levenmouth-Thornton railway will be double track and electrified when it is reopened - and operated by battery-electric trains. Scottish Transport Minister Graeme Dey confirmed the plans for the infrastructure on 15 June.

Locations for the stations have also now been decided, with Leven behind the town’s leisure centre and Cameron Bridge to the east of the A915 following detailed development work and stakeholder consultation.

Network Rail will design and build the line and project costs will be confirmed with the final business case, which is expected to be published towards the end of the year. Depending on Fife Council planning processes, the railway could reopen in 2024: NR hopes it could be completed by the end of 2023.

Trains will connect the Levenmouth area to Fife and Edinburgh, and Fife Council is developing improvements to local bus services and active travel to connect with the railway.
