A MASS transit system using up to four different candidate technologies has been proposed for the West Yorkshire region.

The plan forms part of wider ambitions for the region’s transport network published by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, presented in its Connectivity Infrastructure Plan as well as its Mass Transit Vision 2040, which include heavy rail investments such as HS2 and Northern Powerhouse Rail. WYCA says the plan will enable it to meet its target of achieving net-zero carbon by 2038.

The aim is to start construction of the mass transit system in the mid-2020s. WYCA undertook a market testing exercise in 2019 to inform its plans, with conclusions indicating the importance of segregation from general traffic, the possibility for autonomous operation in a fully segregated environment and the feasibility of planning for battery operation without overhead wires.
