New look for Hackney Wick

NETWORK RAIL Chair Sir Peter Hendy has officially opened the new-look London Overground station on the North London line at Hackney Wick.

Improvements under the £25 million scheme include a new underpass, lifts and better access to the station. The underpass is divided into two, with one half for passengers now open and the other for pedestrians to open later in the year, providing new links across the railway line. A new ticket hall has also been built at ground floor level and new stairwells and lifts provide easier access to the platforms.

Architect Landolt Brown has designed the subway, drawing on the area’s industrial heritage and waterways to influence the design, and the wall has been designed to look like light reflecting off water. The principal funder for the project was the London Legacy Development Corporation, alongside contributions of £1 million each from Tower Hamlets and Hackney Councils.
