Government forecasts suggest the East Midlands population will rise by half a million people to 5.1 million by 2030. This represents the fastest growth outside London and the South East, with hot spots including Derby, Leicester, Nottingham and Lincoln. The Humber Ports/Lincoln and Nottingham/Derby to Birmingham is one of six ‘Intensive Growth Corridors’ identified by Midlands Connect where strategic transport investment needs to be targeted to support economic growth; the Lincoln to Nottingham railway is key to this strategic corridor.
