The Autumn Statement came with a promise of £450 million for the Digital Railway (p26). Good news indeed, but aside from a few other small commitments to rail development, the majority of the transport infrastructure funding announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond was targeted at road investment. Given the history of Network Rail’s enhancements programme this is no surprise, indeed it is hard to see how it could take on any more work at the present time.
