The Superannuated Anoraks visit the oldest electric railway, a railway battlefield and two Island lines
The morning sun brings shades of brown and grey to the East Midlands Railway, bright spring greens elsewhere, but this is not the Meridian which EMR cleaned. There is a‘new’ Turbostar in the next platform looking very smart in its new purple livery. Southern‘171s’are trickling in now, becoming‘170s’as they revert to BSI couplers and lose their Southern Dellner heads, a job foreseen years ago – Iwonder if they kept the original heads?
This trip is before EMR lost its Class 180s, yet it is announced that the catering trolley can’t get through standard class due to overcrowding. We lose a few minutes leaving Leicester, but I can’t complain as the orange army are ‘managing’vegetation – good work. We are non-stop to London now, all tickets checked on the train, yet arriving at St Pancras 11 late we spend another minute queueing to get through the barriers.
