Network Rail is earmarking £22 million in Control Period 7, which started on 1 April, to tackle landslips on the East Coast main line.
A series of recent incidents at Aycliffe and between Newark and Grantham have caused major disruption.
NR says the funding will improve drainage on the London – Edinburgh route to help prevent such incidents occurring in the future. Preventative work is taking place at Browney Curve near Durham where engineers are stabilising more than 0.6 miles of land near the route.
East Coast Route Director Paul Rutter said climate change is an ‘ever increasing problem for our aging infrastructure’ and added that NR is carrying out climate resilience work including improvements to monitoring of drainage systems.
