The Government has released £317 million to develop the next stage of the TransPennine Route Upgrade. It follows an award of £589 million in July 2020 for Network Rail to award contracts for design activity and early construction enabling work.
The funding will electrify York to Church Fenton, and design work including line speed improvements and electrification between Manchester and Stalybridge, Huddersfield and Leeds, and development work considering full electrification. It also will pay for further work including extra line speed improvements, station upgrades and provision for digital signalling. Gauge clearance and capacity options to improve freight capability, particularly for intermodal traffic.
