Given both its suddenness and impact, the immediate withdrawal of all Hitachi trains, bar the Class 395s on Southeastern’s domestic Channel Tunnel rail link services, from 05.00 on 8 May, triggered the biggest crisis on the rail network since the gauge corner cracking panic following the Hatfield derailment in October 2000. But there was one significant difference.
