Within Network Rail’s Wessex Route, two major signalling schemes are dominating the Control Period 6 (2019-24) programme. The largest by far is Feltham resignalling, which was in fact initiated in CP5 (2014-19) and is valued at £375 million. Second is the Portsmouth Direct upgrade, valued at £94.5 million.
FELTHAM PHASES
The Feltham scheme is an asset renewal covering a significant area of south west London and out into Surrey and Berkshire. The project has been split into six phases (see map, overleaf), although two will be in fact be commissioned simultaneously.
The area concerned is that covered by the Feltham Area Signalling Centre (comprising four panels, although one is already redundant) plus the box at Wokingham. Commissioned in 1974, the equipment at Feltham is now beyond its planned life and is requiring intensive maintenance to keep it working. At 500 Signalling Equipment Units (SEUs), this is one of the largest conventional resignalling schemes being undertaken by Network Rail.
