Credit where it’s due, Network Rail’s new Environmental Sustainability Strategy is full of commitment. While the 2013 edition had good intentions, the 2020 one says ‘We will’ repeatedly on no fewer than 33 of the 49 pages. In 2013 the commitment was to ‘understand the vegetation near the line’, mentioning biodiversity once, twice if you count the heading. The 2020 report gives it eight pages, which I will summarise by quoting this extract:
