Network Rail has published a study exploring how capacity could be increased north of York on the East Coast main line

The railway north of York is set to get busier in future years when the impact of Covid recedes. Network Rail’s ‘Church Fenton to Newcastle Strategic Advice’ document, published in April 2020, seeks to answer the question: What is required to make the rail network between Church Fenton and Newcastle ready for the 2030s and beyond?
